Recirculating or Ducted?
This depends on the layout of your kitchen. A ducted cooker hood requires an external wall, and a hole must be drilled through it. It is a more expensive and cumbersome installation process, but it results in a better performance. This is because ducted hoods remove smoke and moisture in addition to grease and odours – whereas recirculating hoods only eliminate the latter. There is also no need to replace filters every few months, so the cost of installing a ducted hood may break even in the long term.
This is up to personal preference, as most cooker hoods feature quite versatile designs. Chimney cooker hoods, canopy cooker hoods and curved glass cooker hoods will look great in just about any type of kitchen décor scheme. However, linear hoods tend to suit modern and industrial style kitchens better. If you’re looking at designer extractors, they would be best suited to more contemporary kitchens – but they could also work as statement pieces among minimalistic décor.
Noise is a major consideration for larger households. If your family enjoys cooking together, a noisy cooker hood may be a nuisance while you’re trying to have a conversation. Even if only one person is cooking, a loud extractor may disturb people in the next room. So, a quiet hood may be best for you. Keep an eye out for models with a noise level of 55 decibels and less, like the Baumatic BTC975 (47dB) and the CDA 3L9 Designer Lantern Style cooker hood (53dB).
Many 100cm cooker hoods come equipped with special features that help to benefit your household. For example, many cooker hoods in the
Classixx range come with an intensive setting. This is especially useful if you regularly cook quite pungent dishes, such as curries and chilli.
Another useful special feature is the 24H Comfort function which is available exclusively on Galvamet cooker hoods. This function ensures that the cooker hood turns on at regular intervals throughout the day to extract everyday odours and residual smoke. It is quite useful for larger households or at homes in which one or more person in a smoker.
